…Popov acted like a shaman pursuing a true ritual, while leaning over his instruments, tightening something up, listening and generating the throbbing rhythm. The shadow of his hat obscured the face, and therefore it was impossible to understand if the musician was young or old…

Popov, Alexandr Kuzmitch was born the 2nd of August 1951 in Tashkent, where according to his own recollection, became a victim of soviet regime, namely for being a human rights defender. In 1967 he received his first conviction - 10 years of high security prison. Popov preferred not to elaborate on the events, barely mentioning the severity of the penalty (he never succeeded in receiving any kind of amnesty). But time was not spent in vain – he learned to play guitar. In 1977 Popov released from the jail, same year he decided to leave Tashkent for good. He continued perfecting his technique, and even began to teach in regional cultural centers. Alexandr Kuzmitch participated in local competitions, took prizes. In the eighties he got two more convictions, and in 1991 finally reached Moscow.

Popov gave a very specification of his art which one may find rather bizarre and amusing. Such as "hippie-ethno-turbo-trance" or even "orthodox vedism." The scale and the layering of his music often suggest that such a musical genre might be easily characterized as "space rock”. However, in this case there is no any specific need for labeling his oeuvre. Alexandr Kuzmitch didn’t seem interested much in such nonsense, as evidenced by the fact that many of his tracks are untitled. Some music doesn’t need any comments, otherwise is only distorts the perception of a listener.

Much more information on Alexandr Kuzmitch can be found by anyone encouraged to get into to his meditative sound performances, which just a few years ago, he gave to passers-by on the streets and boulevards of central Moscow. A gloomy gray-haired bearded man with an acoustic or electric guitar and homemade equipment, furnished by the intricate hand-written ads, had enchanted Muscovites with unearthly psychedelic improvisations. Several of his studio recordings have survived thanks to those who were lucky enough to buy discs during one of these performances.
